Bill Goes Back to School

Inveterate traveler Bill Tomicki is off to Oxford University to study.

The Montecito resident, who writes the popular Entree travel newsletter, will be a student at Christ Church College, one of the city’s most prestigious institutions founded by Henry VIII’s Cardinal Wolsey, and sister college to Trinity, Cambridge, where Prince Charles studied in the ‘70s.

“I will be residing at the Meadows dorm, which dates back one hundred and fifty years, studying a course on the human brain and the senses taught by Gillie McNeill, a noted expert in neuroscience,” says Bill of his weeklong adventure, which is part of the university’s residential summer program.

“I had the option of over sixty different courses in history, art, music, literature, creative writing and politics, but decided on the brain.

“It’s in connection with a novel I am writing. I have been informally studying the human mind for a year now. The more I read, the more I am confounded by how mysterious and indecipherable our minds are.
“When the opportunity arose to attend Oxford, I jumped at the chance.”

As well as touring the college, where J.K. Rowling’s Harry Potter films and Evelyn Waugh’s Brideshead Revisited were shot, Bill says he is particularly looking forward to visiting The Eagle and Child, a favorite haunt of The Lord of the Rings writer, J.R.R. Tolkien and The Lion, the Witch and the Wardrobe author, C.S. Lewis...
